As We Are is my attempt to capture the essence of the people who have influenced me most. Despite taking pride in being a self motivated student and photographer, I realize that nearly everything I have accomplished has been with the helping hands of the people I love. These hands represent the help I have been given each and every day. Furthermore, I find hands, alone, to be portraits; they seem to be a window into the soul of the person who holds them. They emit a personality nearly identical to their masters’; I see shyness, discipline, and honesty in their posture while their shapes and wrinkles tell a story of their own.
In the remainder of the exhibition, I display more conventional portraits of those who have shaped me. Some have recently become influential while others have been part of me forever. Nonetheless, I attempt to capture each as simply and honestly as possible. As We Are is my attempt to transfer the natural beauty that I am blessed to see everyday onto paper that will last longer than memory. Perhaps this is my way of recording, remembering, and thanking the people I love.
